Brand new bag for me!

Yesterday I decided to make a brand new Crazy Creation bag for me!! I selected some fabulous batik fabrics in teal, turquoise and chocolate shades and designed a new pattern. It took me all of yesterday to rustle up something that would have taken Marilyn about 2 hours! This is the end result of which I am rather pleased. The bag is made from crazy patchwork and decorated with machine feather stitch in teal coloured thread. It has an inside zipped pocket and mobile phone pocket and I made an adjustable strap with the help of some rather lovely wooden buttons. The fastening is made from a length of waxed cotton cord and another button. The cord wraps around the button and is weighted with wooden beads to keep the bag closed.

Basic Requirements for Crazy Patchwork

You don't need any fancy equipment to get started with crazy patchwork; you don't even need a sewing machine, although this would speed up the process, especially if you are making a new quilt for your bed!! Any needlworker or quilter will most likely already own the essentials, any others are readily available in craft and quilting shops. The absolute basics required are scissors, needles, pins, sewing thread, fabric, iron and ironing board. Any light to medium weight fabric will do although cotton is the easiest to work with if you are a beginner. Optional additions are embroidery hoops, embroidery threads, embellishments and trims. Marilyn has finished the commissioned bag order we received yesterday and our customer is very pleased with the result! The bag has crazy patchwork all over and is decorated with cream machine feather stitch. The bag is lined with plain cerise and fastens with a magnetic clasp.

We have received a new bag order for Marilyn to work on today. The customer requested a bag to their own specifications rather than using one of our regular designs. The remit is a small rectangular bag with flap and long strap suitable for evening use but not too flashy! Colours pink and cream. The customer selected the fabrics below from a choice of about fifteen different pinks and creams! Will post work in progress photo's later.

Project: Crazy Patchwork Glasses Case

Finished size (closed) 90cm x 180cm.

You will need:

 Approximately 20cm x 26cm lightweight calico or cotton for the crazy patchwork foundation

 Approximately 20cm x 26cm plain cotton fabric for the lining

 Approximately 20cm x 26cm of lightweight cotton batting

 Scraps of cotton fabrics in assorted colours for the crazy patches

 Variegated machine thread

 Monofilament thread (optional)

 1 snap fastener/popper

 1 button (optional)

Making the Crazy Patchwork:
1. Press all fabrics thoroughly. Using the pattern provided cut out 1 piece of calico and 1 lining. Using a fabric pen or pencil mark the lining with the popper positioning.

2. From one of the coloured fabrics cut a four or five sided irregular shape and lay it, with right side facing up, on one corner of the calico, overlapping the edge slightly. Pin in place through the center of the patch.

3. Cut another shape, in a different colour, and lay it next to the first patch overlapping or underlapping the patch edges by at least 5mm. Pin in place. Continue in this way until all of the foundation is covered, there should be no gaps.

4. Baste the patches in place approximately 6mm from the raw edges and remove the pins. Press thoroughly. Trim overhanging patches to the edge of the calico, (Fig 1).

5. Using the variegated thread machine satin stitch over the raw edges of the patches to secure them in place. Remove the basting stitches.

Construction:

6. Lay the lining on a hard surface with right sides face down. Lay the cotton batting on top of the lining matching up the edges. Lay the crazy patchwork on top of the cotton batting with right sides facing up, (Fig 2). Pin and baste the sandwich together. Remove the pins and press thoroughly.

7. Fold the finished sandwich in half and line up the edges, (Fig 3). Pin together. Using monofilament thread or the same variegated thread stitch the sandwich together just inside the satin stitch edge.

8. Stitch the button (if using) on the outside of the flap in the position indicated on the pattern. Stitch one part of the popper to the inside of the flap and the other part on the main body of the glasses case as indicated on the pattern.
